Along the way we stopped off for final Tim Hortons, gas and shopping. A nice long drive but reached our destination around 3-4pm. A very busy time – so I thought.
After settling into the apartment we headed out to a NY Knicks game at Madison Garden. NY of course put on a show and it rained the whole way there and most of the way back. Game was really awesome though. The Knicks unfortunately lost but it was a great ambience to be in! Walking through Times Square was almost a dream come true. It was just so surreal.
Morning came and we wandered around the city and went to B&H [electronic shop] before checking out the Harry Potter expedition. The expo was full of props, set, clothing and other bits and pieces from all of the movies. It really was awesome to see. Got to put the real sorting hat, see all the stars clothing, dorm rooms, and lots more.
That evening we saw Mary Poppins on Broadway. I really was practically perfect in every way. The costuming and props were stunning. This being the main difference being between New Plymouth Operatic shows and Broadway.
Thursday arrived and we headed out reasonably early, [but apparently not early enough] to Statue of Liberty. We stood in line for 3 hours before boarding the ferry to head over to Liberty Island. Definitely worth the wait though. Standing below the statue was a pretty cool feeling and the views of Lower Manhattan were awesome!
After catching the ferry back to Manhattan we wandered through Wall Street [Financial District – home to NY Stock Exchange etc], also China town briefly and ate pizza and pasta in Little Italy for dinner.
Friday was a day of minor shopping, a wander around Rockefeller area, and a few hours at Central Park. Wandering around the park trying to spot movie/tv scenes was pretty fun. We ate lunch at the boathouse from 27 dresses. Was pretty sweet! Headed back to the apartment that afternoon and just hung out.
Ate dinner at Hard Rock café’ that evening and then wandered around Times Square with Nic after.

Saturday 15th we climbed...into the lifts and hit the observatory deck of the Rockefeller center. An attraction commonly known as ‘Top of the Rock’. From the top we had amazing views of Manhattan and beyond. It was a clear enough day, bit windy but was great! Caught a ferry over to Staten Island that afternoon and headed to the mall where we spent the remainder of the day.
Sunday i headed to Brooklyn. Getting there of course I walked across the famous Brooklyn Bridge. Great views again from here and it was pretty cruisy. After Brooklyn I headed to the World Trade Center site aka Ground Zero. Checked out the memorial here and also the new WTC building they are constructing. Pouring with rain I decided to head back to the apartment. Nic and Dave were also back. They had been over to the Bronx to see a Yankess game.
Monday was a day of good food [= Lunch at the bus café in Bleecker street area, but only after checking out the famous Magnolia Bakery and the steps used in Sex and the City. Yummy cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery and also a wander down 5th Avenue. Late afternoon was spent back at the apartment and then it was Bubba’s Gumps for dinner. One of my favourite restaurants. A huge shrimp meal for me then a strawberry shortcake dessert. It was so good, but we were all so full.
Tuesday I headed off again alone as Nic and Dave went and checked out some museums. Checked out South Seaport, Soho and spent a few hours at each. Walked to the base of Empire State building and then over to the United Nations building. Unfortunately it was closed when I arrived. Burritos for dinner and then I began packing as our trip had drawn to a close.
Final morning in NYC we wandered around Times Square and did final packing. After eating lunch, Nic and Dave departed to the airport. I still had a few hours to kill, so just did some more walking around the city.
